How to Meal Plan For The Week in 3 Simple Steps

If you feel overwhelmed by trying to get tonight’s meal on the table, then planning for an entire week probably makes your head want to explode!  Meal planning is a time and money saver, but can be a bit daunting for some.  If that’s you, then let me show you how to meal plan for the week in 3 simple steps.

Step One: Take a peak into your fridge and freezer.

  • Check and see what you already have on hand.  Write it down!  If you buy meat on sale and freeze it, then you may already have the foundation for several meals.
  • Figure out which veggies are getting ready to turn and make a note of it.  You’ll want to either use or freeze these right away. (Tip: freezing vegetables can be a great way to add them to breads, sauces, soups and dips later.)

Step Two: Think through all the upcoming week’s activities.

  • Make note of all the nights you already have activities or dinner plans.
  • Figure out which evenings you need a quick meal, and which days will require a crockpot so you don’t have to think about dinner.
  • Plan for any guests that you might be hosting, or take the time right now to invite someone!

Step Three: Start plugging in your meals.

  • Start with the non-cook nights; write them on your meal plan calendar (or a piece of paper, or a napkin or whatever).
  • Plug in 1-2 easy meals (more if you hate to cook, but have to).  This can be breakfast for dinner, baked potatoes, leftovers, tostadas, etc.
  • Now, look for recipes to fill the rest of your week, using the ingredients you have on hand.  Pinterest is great for this!  Type in the meat or vegetable you want to use, and watch the recipes come right to you!
  • If your week isn’t full yet, then bust out some cookbooks or check out posts from your favorite bloggers (heh-hem) to finalize your week of recipes.

IMPORTANT: Keep a running grocery list while you meal plan, and check to make sure you have the ingredients for each recipe you choose.

I find that meal planning makes everything run smoother at dinner time.  It also reminds me what I need to pull out of the freezer for the week.

I’d love to hear how and if this works for you!  It makes perfect sense to me, but let me know what you think. 🙂

Peace & Love,
