Last night, a dear friend and I had ourselves a girls’ night out down in Southtown (the south side of downtown San Antonio) at a delicious Belgian restaurant called, La Frite.  The food was amazing, and our night probably would have concluded there, except just next door we spotted a “boozey” ice cream shop.  What the what?  It didn’t matter if we were full, this was a must-try situation.

The House (it’s actual name) was hopping with hipsters, and mohawks and tiny children who wear Vans.  And this 40 year-old mom felt a bit out of place, but I didn’t care.  I wanted the ice cream.  I NEEDED the ice cream.

When we finally made it to the counter and asked to sample some flavors, the most awesome thing happened…WE GOT CARDED!  FOR ICE CREAM!!!  I always love getting carded, but for ice cream?  Best day ever.  They weren’t kidding about the boozey, were they?

I ended up with the oh-so-nummy Bourbon Vanilla.

If you’re not the “boozey” type, or wondered what on earth those children were doing there, don’t worry – they have several flavors that don’t require an ID.  Last night was actually their first night to be open, and was a “soft” opening that we were just lucky enough to attend!  Based on what I tasted and saw, I think they are gonna do OK.

I couldn’t find a website, Facebook page, Twitter handle OR Instagram for The House just yet, but I will tell you, they are located at 732 S. Alamo St., San Antonio 78205.  Show this new local business some love!

DIY – {Almost} Perfect Stripes on Textured Walls!



I don’t know how it is in every state, but if you live in Texas, and have a home that was built in the last 20 years, then you most likely have heavily textured walls.  The heavy texture is great for hiding construction imperfections, but can be the downright nemesis of an interior painter, like myself, who just wants to make their clients’ Pinterest dreams come true.  Certain faux finishes, walls covered in stencils and perfect stripes are all challenged to a face-off by that pesky texture.  I’m not sure where the walls are in all those precious DIY painting books and perfectly poised Pinterest posts, but they ain’t in Texas.

So, if you’ve got textured walls and want some stripes, but don’t really have the wherewithal to re-mud all the walls into a nice, smooth surface, then this tutorial will help you get {almost} perfect striped walls.  And if you’re one of those people with smooth walls (don’t go bragging about it), then these tips will work for you too – just omit the caulking step.

Step 1:

Paint all the walls in the color that you prefer as dominant.  This means painting a good, finished coat, completely cut-in as if it were the only color.  If you’re doing equal stripes (like the room shown), then use the lighter color as the base.  If you’re using the same color in differing sheens, then use the flattest sheen first.

Step 2:

For vertical stripes: Beginning in the corner closest to the backside of the door, start measuring out where you want your stripes to be.  Use a pencil to mark each measurement.  (The ones pictured are 6 inches apart equally, and of course you can do any size you prefer, even a combination of sizes.)  Place a level vertically against the mark and make sure that the bubble is centered.  Once you’re level, go ahead and run your pencil alongside it to create a line.  Move your level up or down, depending on where you start, to finish out the line.  Don’t forget to make sure you are still level!

For horizontal stripes: This one is much easier…figure out where you want the bottom of the stripe to be, and place the level horizontally in that spot (again, starting from the corner behind the door, or nearest the backside of the door).  Make sure you’re level and drag the pencil along the top side.  Keep moving the level all the way around the room until you have the bottom of the stripe completed.  Now, measure out where you want the top of the stripe to go, and do the same process over again.  Never forget to continue checking the little bubble on your level! 

Step 3:

Using painter’s tape, tape off the stripes.  You want to make sure that the tape is sitting just along the outside of the pencil mark where your stripe will be.  This way, when you fill in the stripe, you will cover up the pencil mark as well.  *Note: your mind will start to play tricks on you during this process!  You’ll have to pay close attention to where your putting your tape so you’re stripes come out the way you intended them to. 🙂

Step 4:

This step is the magic behind getting {almost} perfect stripes on a textured wall!  It’s the DAP painter’s acrylic latex caulk.  This is the only kind you can use.  Trust me, I’ve tried others and they don’t work.  I’m a die-hard Sherwin Williams Paint fan, but their “paintable” caulk, did not serve me well for this type of project.  Take the caulk and squeeze it into a damp towel and begin working it into the inside line of your tape, filling all the crevices that the texture creates.  Do this all the way around the room, only on the interior side of the stripe (the side receiving the paint).

Step 5:

Paint the stripes! It’s a lot of work getting to this point, but well worth it once you see how amazing your stripes look.  My suggestion is to take a small roller to fill in the stripes, using a paint brush to fill in along the ceiling and baseboards.  *Important!!  As soon as you are able, pull the tape off!  You don’t want to let it sit too long because it could pull of the dried paint.  If you don’t need a second coat of paint on the stripes, pull the tape off as you go.  If a second coat is necessary, then pull the tape off as soon as you can.  After the tape is removed, you can take an artists paint brush and fill in any remaining pencil marks, or straighten up any noticeably uneven lines.

IT WILL NOT BE PERFECT.  My suggestion, is to step out of the room for a bit, and come back in and see what jumps out at you.  Fix those spots ONLY.  Otherwise, you’ll make yourself crazy!  And I cannot be responsible for your mental health – I have too much going on.

Downtown Tuesday – San Fernando Cathedral Light Show

If you haven’t seen the lights at The San Fernando Cathedral yet, you need to go!

Last night, our family enjoyed some time in downtown San Antonio.  It’s one of our favorite places to hang out as a family, especially now that we live just 10 minutes from the River Walk.  The only thing that keeps us from hanging out there more often is the cost of parking.  Thankfully, the city has Downtown Tuesday, where the parking is FREE after 5 P.M.! (Please click here for a list of available parking.)

Our evening started off with some dinner at Guadalajara Grill, which was delicious.

 We followed that with some live music at La Villita’s Arneson River Theater.

 Then, we walked over the The San Fernando Cathedral to catch the video art show developed by world-renowned artist Xavier de Richemont.   It really is a site to see, as it depicts the history of San Antonio through lights and music, shown right on the façade of the cathedral.  Here are a few, don’t do it justice, pictures:

Easy Carbonara

It’s time for another “easy and I already have the ingredients” meal!  You’ll find that very few of my recipes are time consuming, but I love good food.  Therefore, I like to think that I offer up meals to my family (and to you) that beat the average throw-together meal.  Tonight, how about making some easy carbonara?


 Let’s start by cooking up some bacon.  Mmmmm…can you smell it? (Yes, I know carbonara calls for pancetta, but I didn’t have that on hand.  Besides, who doesn’t love bacon?) While that’s cooking, go ahead and begin to boil a large pot of water for the noodles (1lb. of spaghetti, to be exact).

While that’s cooking up, and you’re waiting for water to boil, go ahead and whisk together in a medium bowl, 2 large, room temperature eggs, 2/3 cup heavy whipping cream and 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese.  *NOTE: I keep heavy whipping cream in the house for cooking and for ice cream.  If you don’t, but have half-and-half or whole milk, that will work.  You can also use an Italian blend shredded cheese, which is what I did because I was out of parmesan.

Once the bacon gets crispy, drain it on a paper towel.

Add the noodles to the boiling water, and add 1/2 cup of chopped onion to the bacon grease.  Let it get translucent, and then add 2minced garlic cloves.  Crumble the bacon and throw it back into the pan.

Drain the noodles and set aside.

Add the egg mixture to the pan with the onions and garlic and bacon; stir.  Remove from heat.

Add noodles to the skillet with the sauce and toss until coated.

Garnish with a sprinkle of grated cheese and parsley.

Easy Carbonara


  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 cup grated parmesan cheese (or an Italian blend works fine)
  • 2/3 cup heavy whipping cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 5 pieces of bacon (I prefer thick sliced)
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • parsley garnish


  1. Begin by cooking your bacon in a skillet; remove from pan once crispy.
  2. Place eggs, 1/2 cup of cheese and whipping cream into a bowl and whisk.
  3. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add spaghetti; cook to desired tenderness.
  4. As the spaghetti cooks, saute the onions in the bacon grease until translucent; add in garlic for another minute. Remove from heat.
  5. Drain the spaghetti and set aside.
  6. Stir the egg mixture into the pan with the onions and garlic, and crumble in the bacon.
  7. Place the noodles in the skillet and toss with the mixture until they are coated. This will NOT be saucy.
  8. Garnish with additional parmesan or Italian cheese and parsley.

Breakfast Skillet



This week’s featured recipe is one born out of a need not to have to think too hard.  Coming off of a busy and exhausting weekend, I needed a Monday night dinner that could be made with things I already had on hand. Hash browns?  Check.  Breakfast sausage?  Check.  Eggs?  Check.  Shredded cheese?  Double check.  This breakfast skillet was the perfect dinner, would be equally perfect for breakfast or brunch!

Breakfast is often what I go to for a mindless dinner, but I knew this dish would make my family think I cared deeply for them to cook something so delicious, even in my exhaustion.  It totally worked.  And they don’t have to know how easy it was.

*Note: If you’re thinking of making this dish, please be sure that you have an oven-safe skillet.  I prefer cast iron, and found this one for $20 at Target.  However, any oven-safe skillet will do.

You’ll want to start by thoroughly cooking your sausage.  We do this first to give the pan a nice coat of grease to keep the dish from sticking to the pan once it’s finished.

While the sausage is cooking, whisk up 8 eggs, 1/4 cup of milk and some salt & pepper and preheat another pan over medium heat.

Remove the cooked sausage from the skillet and add in a thin, even layer of your choice of hash browns.  Let them get brown and crispy on one side before flipping them over.

*Note: I had leftover hash browns from Bill Miller’s barbeque restaurant that I used for these, and if you live in the San Antonio area, I recommend you do the same.  Seriously, best hash browns on the planet.  If you don’t live in San Antonio, well, I’m sorry about that.  I’m sure your town is nice and your potatoes will be fine. 😉

Melt some butter in your heated (other) skillet and add the egg mixture, stirring until they’re cooked through.  Remove from the heat when they’re finished.

Leave the cooked hash browns in the skillet and pile on top of them the sausage, eggs, a generous helping of shredded cheese, ans some diced green onions, like so:

ingredients piledPop that baby in a pre-heated oven for 10 minutes, and dinner is served!  While this dish was in the oven, I cut up some oranges and strawberries to serve alongside it.  A glass of orange juice made the kiddies happy too.  It ain’t fancy, and it ain’t hard, but it is good.

And if you want to make it extra fancy by adding more ingredients, or subbing one thing for another, then please do!  Otherwise, enjoy this quick and simple breakfast any time of day.

Breakfast Skillet


  • 1lb. Breakfast Sausage - any flavor
  • 1 bag hash brown potatoes - any style
  • 8 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 1/2 Tbl butter
  • 1-2 cups of shredded cheese - your choice
  • green onions, diced


  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Brown your sausage in a cast iron skillet.
  3. While the sausage cooks, place eggs, milk salt & pepper (to taste) in a medium bowl and whisk.
  4. After the sausage is thoroughly cooked, remove it from the pan and set aside.
  5. Add hash browns to the cast iron skillet in a thin, even layer over the bottom - don't over fill. Turn the hash browns over once the bottom has a nice, crispy brown color and let the other side cook.
  6. While the hash browns are cooking, heat another skillet over medium heat with the butter. Once it's ready, add the egg mixture and stir frequently so the eggs don't stick to the pan. Remove from heat when cooked through.
  7. When the hash browns are browned on both sides, remove the pan from the heat.
  8. Add the sausage back to the skillet, on top of the hash browns.
  9. Top the hash browns & sausage with the scrambled eggs.
  10. Top the skillet with anywhere from 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese.
  11. Garnish with the diced green onions.
  12. Place the skillet in the oven and bake for 10 minutes.

Starting Over!

So back in January I launched Her Hippie Heart’s blog, only to dicover that it wasn’t everything thing I wanted.  Truthfully, as a 40 year old, I felt kind of dizzy trying to decide what I want to do with the next 40 years of my life, and figuring out how to blog about it!

After several weeks of research and trial and error and frustration and triumph, I think I’m on my way!  I’ve set my sights on things that are true to who I am (painting, eating, having fun and re-designing), and want to share that with whoever might be interested.
